For the first time in China, a data center has been given an industry leading certification for energy efficient buildings. As the Environmental Sustainability Design (ESD) consultant, Meinhardt will help our client save up to 60% of annual energy consumption.
Green Business Certification Inc. , an international sustainability certification body which certifies green buildings within the framework of the US Green Building Council, has certified NTT Communications Hong Kong Financial Data Center Tower 2 (FDC2) LEED-CS 2009 (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design TM or LEED 2009 for Core and Shell Development) Platinum level (top category).
Meinhardt’s sustainable design for the project garnered a perfect score of 21 points in the US Green Building Council’s EAC1 optimise energy performance indicator, which measures a green building’s energy efficiency. This is one of the critical data centers located in Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, Hong Kong, that is set to propel the nation into the next generation of data centers, infrastructure, cloud computing and the data-driven economy.
Helen Cochrane, Director of Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Limited and LEED Consultant for FDC2 says, “Of the seven categories, Sustainable Sites was one of the most challenging metrics to meet as it measures whether a data center has an adverse environmental impact on the site, for instance, heat island, light pollution and solar access to green spaces. To reduce the energy use, carbon footprint and environmental impact, a ‘Think Sustainability from the Project Start’ approach was adopted. Building and operating FDC2 with that approach established the data center with a strong foundational roadmap from design, construction, and operation, to service delivery. The success of the project shows that one can build and operate a top-notch green data center with innovative technologies. The LEED-CS 2009 Platinum certification highlights NTT Communications’ achievement in attaining sustainable development, which is widely recognised by the international green certification association.”
