The new Victorian Air Wing and Air Ambulance Victoria facility at Essendon Airport is a state-of-the-art home for both the Police and Ambulance helicopters and Air Ambulance fixed wing aircraft.
This world-class facility improves Victoria’s ability to respond to emergencies and mass casualties. The A$20 million facility comprises two steel frame hangar building to house and service the aircraft. The facility also includes two separate, two level operational buildings which provide flight control, workshops, administration space, training simulators and accommodation for pilots, patients and family.
Located at Essendon fields, the architect, Billard Leece Partnership and the client, desired a striking architectural look as the facility was clearly visible from the Tullamarine Freeway. This lead to the large sweeping curves of the hangar roofs juxtaposed with the sharp angles of the office buildings.
Meinhardt provided both Structural and Civil engineering services.
